Falmouth High School Mural
In June of 2015, four 4'x8' murals were installed on the back of a Wood Lumber storage building located on the Shining Sea Bikeway between Locust Street and Depot Avenue (mile 3.4) Artist friends of Woods Hole artist Joan Kandwisher donated funds to the Friends of Falmouth Bikeways for a project to honor her 90th birthday. The Falmouth High School advanced art students of teacher Jane Baker designed and painted the murals. They depict the early history of the Shining Sea Bikeway. In 1965, Joan and her friend Barbara Burwell introduced and promoted a recreational trail on the old railroad bed whose terminus was Woods Hole. It took 10 years of advocacy before the first section of the Shining Sea Bikepath was completed. It was named for Falmouth native Katharine Lee Bates.
